Every leader eventually leaves the role. The deeper question is what remains because we were there—the judgment, courage, trust, responsibility, and capacity we built into the people around us.

Being needed can feel like evidence of effective leadership. But if every decision, problem, and difficult moment eventually requires us, our usefulness may be limiting the people we are supposed to develop.

Leaders carry real responsibility. But sometimes we also carry problems, decisions, consequences, and burdens that belong to others. Knowing what to carry—and what to put down—is part of developing people well.

Leaders are responsible for many problems, but that does not mean they should personally carry all of them. Knowing when to step in—and when to help someone else carry responsibility—is part of developing capable people.
